The editorial take

What makes an icebreaker question actually good?

Most icebreaker lists recycle the same 10 questions that have been passed around since 2003. "What's a fun fact about yourself?" creates the same three answers every single time: "I have a dog", "I can touch my elbow to my nose", and silence.

Good icebreaker questions have three qualities. They're specific enough to force a real answer — not something that can be answered with "I like movies." They're safe enough that no one feels put on the spot about something personal. And they're slightly unexpected — questions people haven't been asked before produce answers nobody predicted, which is the whole point.

1

Make it about preferences, not performance

There's no wrong answer to "would you rather always be 10 minutes late or always arrive 20 minutes early?" There is a wrong answer to "what's your greatest strength."

2

Avoid anything that requires credentials

Questions about family, achievements, or status exclude or embarrass people without meaning to. "What's the most useful thing anyone has said to you?" includes everyone.

3

Specific beats broad every time

"What are you passionate about?" gets vague answers. "What app do you open most often that has nothing to do with your job?" gets real ones.

Before & after

↓ Overused
"Tell us a fun fact about yourself."
↑ Actually interesting
"What app do you open most often that has nothing to do with work?"
Forces a specific, honest answer. Tells you something real about the person.
↓ Overused
"What's your favourite thing to do on weekends?"
↑ Actually interesting
"What would your perfect Sunday look like from 8am to midday?"
Same intent, but the specificity makes it much harder to give a generic answer.
↓ Overused
"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
↑ Actually interesting
"What's one goal you have that feels almost too ambitious to say out loud?"
Reveals ambition without the corporate performance review energy.
